A field experiment was conducted at Experimental Station of Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuaria do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, in Avelar, Paty do Alferes, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from july to october/94, in which some agronomic caracteristics of seven winter green manure and (green manure plant + weed-fellow) were evaluated. It was carried in a Red Yellow Podzolic soil (Alfisol), sandy-clay loam, with good fertility status. The treatments were as follows: white lupins (Lupinus albus L.), common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), field peas (Pisum sativum subesp. arvense (L.) Poir), jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.), black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb), oil seed radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. oleiferus Metzg.), and were compared with the free growth of the spontaneous vegetation. The black oats and white lupins showed good canopy cover in a greater period. The white lupins accumulated the greated amount of dry matter and nitrogen (3190 and 81,4 kg/ha-1), followed by jack bean (2545 and 74,4 kg/ha-1), common vetch (1808 and 60,7 kg/ha-1), and field peas (1947 and 49,5 kg/ha-1), respectively. The greated accumulation of dry matter and nitrogen in (green manure plant + weed-fellow), was obtained in the treatment with white lupins (4173 and 98,6 kg/ha-1, respectively). The jack bean accumulated the greates amount of calcium (51,3 kg/ha-1). Comparing all off green manure species, including spontaneous vegetation, the hairy vetch and oil seed radish accumulated the lower amount of dry matter.
